What Counts As Evidence?: Expert Testimony

Authority is Contextual

Authority is contextual in that it comes out of a particular community setting and meets a particular need.

  • A scholar speaks out of an academic discipline, with its own rules and methods.
  • An official speaks out of the authority given by his/her position.
  • An observer speaks out of experience.

Each level of an authority must be evaluated to know what is trustworthy and valuable.
