Researching Private Companies or Local Businesses

Private companies, including local businesses, do not have to disclose the level of financial information as publicly traded corporations.  This can make researching private companies difficult.  Since private companies are not required to report the same level of financial information, statistics on your company may be hard to come by.  Since there is little data on many private companies, it can also make them less likely to have research articles written about them.

To find information on a private or local company try searching for these resources:

  • Company websites
  • Magazine or Journal articles (on a specific company or on the broader industry)
  • Newspaper articles (particularly for local companies)
  • Interviews
  • ReferenceUSA (local company database) (borrow ID and PIN required)

An important concept to remember is that when you lack information on your specific company, you will need to look at information on competitors and industry or market research.  You can find this type of information in resources like Hoover's, Business Source Complete, or ABI/INFORM.
