The ethical challenges that artificial intelligence poses in our lives today are becoming well known, and it’s time to understand better how the ethics aspects of this technology can be systematized in a realistic and enforceable way. Today AI has an impact on our jobs, safety, shopping, justice, and several other activities. In many cases, all of this is happening without a shared and well defined ethical and legal structure to ensure that the technology below it is transparent, accountable, and responsible. We are now in 2020, and I firmly believe that this should start the change, and we should begin to pay attention and consider it an emergency at the same level of climate change today. I’ve been dedicating a consistent part of my studies, my public speaking in conferences, and my networking on promoting awareness and call-to-action regarding the necessity to bring up the topic of AI Ethics in every possible occasion when technology frameworks have been discussed. And from today, you will find on my Medium more and more articles about AI Ethics in a practical and impactful way. To start, I would like to share some of my favorite “food for thoughts” TED Talks about AI Ethics that can really make you start thinking about it. I’ve selected five thought leaders who share what they consider necessary to govern AI and ensure a comprehensive ethical framework, in addition to human intelligence.

What kind of trust does AI deserve, if any? In this paper, I argue that the only kind of trust that should be allocated to AI technologies, if any at all, is epistemic trust. Epistemic trust is defined by Wilholt (Br J Philos Sci 64:233–253, 2013) as the kind of trust that is allocated strictly in virtue of the capacities of the receiver as a provider of information or as a conveyer of knowledge. If, as Alvarado (2022, http://philsci-archive.pitt.edu/id/eprint/21243) argues, AI is first and foremost designed and deployed as an epistemic technology—a technology that is designed, developed and deployed to particularly and especially expand our capacities as knowers—then it follows that we trust AI, when we trust it, exclusively in its capacities as a provider of information and epistemic enhancer. Trusting it otherwise may betray conceptual confusion. As I will show, it follows that trust in AI cannot be modeled after any general kind of interpersonal trust, it cannot be modeled after trust in other technologies such as pharmaceuticals, and it cannot be modeled after the kind of trust we allocate to medical practitioners in their capacities as providers of care. It also follows that, even after it is established that epistemic trust is the only legitimate kind of trust to allocate to epistemic technologies, whether or not AI can, in fact, be trusted remains an open question.

ENAI Recommendations on the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education Rationale Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are constantly being released into the public domain. As with all new technological innovations, this brings a range of opportunities and challenges for education: primarily for educators and learners. There is an increasing interest in the academic community and beyond to use Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) to generate content. This presents opportunities and challenges for academic and research integrity. The European Network for Academic Integrity (ENAI) is an international association gathering educational institutions and individuals interested in maintaining and promoting academic integrity. As the use of AI tools may not always be consistent with academic integrity, we consider it important to familiarise all education stakeholders with how to use AI tools responsibly and in accordance with academic integrity practices and values. ENAI presents a set of recommendations with the aim of supporting academics, researchers and other educational stakeholders, including students’ organizations, on the ethical use of AI tools. The recommendations focus on the importance of equipping stakeholders with the skills and knowledge to use AI tools ethically and the need to develop and implement relevant educational policies addressing the opportunities and challenges posed by AIED.
