The purpose of this guide is to assist researchers in locating Black History information in the library's academic databases.
Students are encouraged to schedule a Research Consultation with a faculty librarian who can help determine what type of sources are needed and suggest the best databases and search strategy for their information needs.
If you need immediate assistance, in-person walk-ins are available during library hours.
Keyword Search Strategies
Researchers can browse individual databases using keywords. Entering "Black History" or "Black History Month." will turn up articles, films, books, and more on broad subjects. To search comprehensively, it is sometimes necessary to use synonyms or words that were commonplace in the past such as "African Americans."
To narrow your search consider combining key terms
African Americans AND World War II
Harlem Renaissance Artists
Black Composers
To broaden your search add OR between keywords or phrases
Sit-ins OR Wade-ins
African Americans OR Black Americans
