The Anderson school is one of the original Rosenwald schools constructed in the early part of the century to enable black children to get an education during segregation. Built in 1930 in Mars Hill, North Carolina, the school is nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. What remains of the building today stands as a legacy and a reminder of the struggle for equal rights -- for all humankind.

Documentary: Rosenwald tells the incredible story of Julius Rosenwald, the son of an immigrant peddler who never finished high school, who rose to become the President of Sears. Influenced by the writings of the educator Booker T. Washington, this Jewish philanthropist joined forces with African American communities during the Jim Crow South to build 5,300 schools, providing 660,000 black children with access to education in the segregated American South.
Inspired by the Jewish ideals of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) and a deep concern over racial inequality in America, Julius Rosenwald used his wealth to become one of America's most effective philanthropists.

Aviva Kempner’s Rosenwald is the incredible story of Julius Rosenwald, who never finished high school, but rose to become the President of Sears. Influenced by the writings of the educator Booker T. Washington, this Jewish philanthropist joined forces with African American communities during the Jim Crow South to build over 5,300 schools during the early part of the 20th century. Inspired by the Jewish ideals of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world), and a deep concern over racial inequality in America, Julius Rosenwald used his wealth to become one of America’s most effective philanthropists. Because of his modesty, Rosenwald’s philanthropy and social activism are not well known today. He gave away $6million in his lifetime.

This is the first in a series of lectures for 2014 provided by the Reedville Fishermen's Museum ( a part of the Greater Reedville Association). Stephanie Deutsch, a noted author on the history of the Rosenwald school system speaks of the partnership between Julius Rosenwald (CEO of Sears Roebuck) and Booker T. Washington, leading to the establishment of an extensive school system for African American children throughout the South.
